Australian consumers have voted on their favourite ciders of the year, with the winners announced at the 2018 Australian Drinks Awards.
Three new consumer-judged awards were added to the Australian Drinks Awards this year: Fan Favourite, Most Distinctive Brand and Emerging Brand.
The winners were determined through a nationally representative consumer survey of 4000 respondents.
Australia’s top 200 brands were automatically entered into the awards. The Fan Favourite was awarded to the brand in each drinks category that cumulatively scored highest across brand metrics (awareness, trial, regular consumption, most often and favourite) and on being identified as a ‘brand I like to be seen with’.
The brand that was perceived most by consumers within each drinks category as ‘gaining in popularity’ most received the Emerging Brand of the Year award.
Within each drinks category, the brand perceived by consumers as being most ‘unique and different’ received the Most Distinctive Brand of the Year award.
Fan Favourite of the Year went to Asahi’s Somersby cider. Emerging Brand of the Year went to Lion’s 5 Seeds. Most Distinctive Brand went to Coca-Cola Amatil’s Rekorderlig.
Consumption of cider has surged in Australia over the past five years according to market research group IBISWorld.
Australia’s burgeoning cider industry has recorded 11.4% growth across the sector to be turning over $309.7 million in revenue in 2017.
And IBISWorld predicts revenue will grow at 5.5% over the next five years to $404.4 million by 2021. IBA also noted that sales of ciders in its stores surge 50% over summer. All good reasons why it's a good time to have your finger on Australia's cider pulse!
Fan Favourite of the Year was sponsored by Mainfreight.

The Australian Drinks Awards are an initiative by The Drinks Association to celebrate excellence in the drinks industry. The 2018 awards were held at the Ivy Ballroom, Sydney, on September 13.
