We all have a refrigerator in our home to keep all our foods and beverages cool, so surely a fridge is fine for storing your wine too?
Not according to the experts at Liebherr. While a refrigerator might be a temporary solution for chilling a sparkling wine or champagne for a dinner party, it's not the right place to store wine, especially when it comes to long-term storage of premium vintages.
"Generally, refrigerator temperature is 4°C or below, which is colder than recommended storage and serving temperatures of white or red wines," the manufacturer notes.
Moët & Chandon's wine quality manager Marie-Christine Osselin says storing wine at the wrong temperature can affect its flavour.
Champagne, for example, should never be stored in the fridge for a significant amount of time.
"If you’re planning to enjoy your bottle of champagne within 3 to 4 days of the purchase, it is fine to store the bottle in the refrigerator," she said.
"But only keep it in the fridge for a few days, or else the bubbly will begin to change. If it sits in the fridge for weeks, the cork can dry out due to no humidity. As corks dry out, the seal between the bottle and the cork loosen up and the champagne will oxidize faster, changing its aromas."
What makes Liebherr wine cellars different from a fridge?

Every zone within a Liebherr wine cellar has an activated charcoal filter to assist in maintaining perfect air quality which is decisive for preserving and maturing wine. Natural untreated beechwood shelves are also important as there are no chemical aromas introduced into the environment which can influence the wines flavour. Perfect air quality also reduces the instance of mould on corks and labels stored long term.
To prevent wine from being disturbed, all Liebherr compressors are mounted on ‘isolation blocks’ designed to absorb vibrations.
