Carlton and United Breweries has triumphed at the 2018 Australian Drinks Awards, taking out both the Domestic and Imported Beer Fan Favourite of the Year trophies.
Victoria Bitter was voted Fan Favourite (Domestic); while Corona was voted Fan Favourite (Imported).
Fan Favourite is one of three new consumer judged awards The Drinks Association has introduced to the Australian Drinks Awards this year, alongside Most Distinctive Brand and Emerging Brand.
Australia’s top 200 brands were automatically entered in Fan Favourite, with the trophy handed to the brand in each drinks category that cumulatively scored highest across brand metrics (awareness, trial, regular consumption, most often and favourite) and on being identified as a ‘brand I like to be seen with’.
The winners were determined through a nationally representative consumer survey of 4000 respondents.
“Receiving the Fan Favourite award signals the status of a brand within the industry as the category leader and as such is an immense honour,” said Chris Papadimitriou from Thrive Research, which led the judging process.
Victoria Bitter has been quenching Aussie thirsts since 1854. It was created by the founder and head brewer of the Victoria Brewery, who decided there needed to be a beer specially brewed for our harsh Aussie climate.
Meanwhile, Australia is now one of the world's biggest markets for Mexico’s Corona beer.
AB InBev CEO Carlos Brito recently revealed Australia has become one of the world's biggest markets for Corona.
"The Corona Ligera launch we did in Australia is a recognition that first Australia is one of the biggest markets we have for Corona,” he noted. “Corona has close to 6% share of total market. It’s an amazing brand and the mid-strength beers in Australia is a segment that’s growing and having a Corona 3.2 ABV is something that will get Corona in that space and appeal to consumers that are looking for that kind of ABV."
"If you look at Corona today, it has less than 1% share in most markets with only two exceptions. And Australia being one of them, Chile being another one. Canada, in a much lower level being another one."

Carlton & United also took out Emerging Brand (Domestic) for Pirate Life and Emerging Brand (Imported) for Goose Island.
Emerging Brand of the Year is the brand that is perceived most by consumers as ‘gaining in popularity’.
