Australia’s Fan Favourite wines of the year

Australia’s Fan Favourite wines of the year

Australian consumers have voted on their favourite wine brands of the year, with the winners announced at the 2018 Australian Drinks Awards.

Fan Favourite is one of three new consumer judged awards The Drinks Association has introduced to the Australian Drinks Awards this year, alongside Most Distinctive Brand and Emerging Brand.

Australia’s top 200 brands were automatically entered in Fan Favourite, with the trophy handed to the brand in each drinks category that cumulatively scored highest across brand metrics (awareness, trial, regular consumption, most often and favourite) and on being identified as a ‘brand I like to be seen with’.

The winners were determined through a nationally representative consumer survey of 4000 respondents.

“Receiving the Fan Favourite award signals the status of a brand within the industry as the category leader and as such is an immense honour,” said Chris Papadimitriou from Thrive Research, which led the judging process.

Fan Favourite Red Wine went to Treasury Wine Estates’ Penfolds; Fan Favourite White Wine went to Pernod Ricard’s Jacob’s Creek; and Fan Favourite Sparkling Wine went to Brown Family Wine Group’s Brown Brothers.

All three Australian labels have a long, hallowed winemaking heritage.

Penfolds was founded in 1844 and is one of Australia's oldest wineries. Its celebrated Grange Shiraz was recently named Australia's most collectable wine by leading wine authority Langton's.

Grange has now topped the Langton's Classification of Australian Wine in all seven editions dating back to 1990.
Jacob’s Creek was founded by Johann Gramp, who first planted grape vines on the banks of the Barossa’s Jacob's Creek in 1847.

Brown Brothers was founded in 1889 by John Francis Brown who, at the age of 18, established a vineyard at Milawa in north-east Victoria.

Fan Favourite of the Year was sponsored by Mainfreight.

“Congratulations to these three iconic brands,” said Mainfreight Business Development Manager Brad Greer. “The awards are a wonderful recognition of your company’s contribution to creating and presenting a genuine brand of excellence. Well done and we look forward to watching you build on this year’s success. Thank you for allowing us to share in your industry awards and be a part of such a special night.”

The Australian Drinks Awards are an initiative by The Drinks Association to celebrate excellence in the drinks industry. The 2018 awards were held at the Ivy Ballroom, Sydney, on September 13.
